Now a fourth generation family business, they attribute their success to diversification and determination alongside traditional family values, writes Catherine Mallord.

In Lancashire we are spoilt for choice when it comes to cheese and from the Longridge site of Singletons dairy, they are sharing this choice all over the world, manufacturing and exporting a vast range of cheese to Japan, Dubai and the USA to name just a few.

Grandma Singletons started out in a farm kitchen on Beacon Fell by Duilla Singletons in 1934 and her initial passion and skill for making delicious Lancashire cheese is still at the heart of the brand today, now led by her great granddaughter Tilly Carefoot.

This skill and passion has been passed down through the generations and the business has flourished, now making a huge range of cheeses including Farmhouse Cheddar, Double Gloucester, Wensleydale with Cranberry and Cheddar with Garlic and Hot Jalapeno alongside Grandmas favourite creamy Lancashire.

In spite of their global success and being stocked in all Britain's leading supermarkets, the business which employs over 85 people at their site in Longridge still has a fantastic family feel about it and continues to build on traditional values, quality and passion.

Operations Director, Gary Johnson has been at Singletons for over 20 years and has seen the transition through generations, from Tillys farther Alan, to Tilly and her brother and now her husband in the business with plans afoot to integrate her son Walt when he finishes university.

Gary said: "Working for a family business provides a really unique and supportive environment and things get done quicker than they might in a big corporate company - anyone can get a direct line to our MD and decisions can be made straight away, what makes sense gets done.

"The passion fo the family resonates through the staff, everyone has a genuine interest in their fellow employees - you feel a sense of pride and attachment and that you're an extension of the family.

"In a family business it is not just about profit and sales figures it is about looking to the future, calling on past experience from the rest of the family and then investing for the next stages of growth, something which Singletons do a lot of."

The business has recently invested in new machinery to improve manufacturing efficiencies as well as new premises for potential expansion of the site.

This is alongside their rigorous ongoing new product development, sets Grandma Singletons in good stead for many more generations of family involvement.

Gary added: "As new generations come into the business so do new ideas and new enthusiasm all with the shared common passion for success and development - and by gum, really good cheese!"
